Who is desired?
This note is about a fashion shoot I did centering on the theme of desire, an emotion that offered many wonderful creative possibilities. The photographs were published in KURV magazine with the title “desire:DESIRE.”
I met with set designer Michael Sturgeon, about whom I wrote in my blog about the Seven Deadly Sins (Blog #163, June 23, 2016, “SEVEN DEADLY SINS”) to discuss my ideas for the series. Also in on the meeting were the fashion stylist Mia Morgan and hair and makeup artists Danielle Cirilli and Christopher Milone.
One section of Sturgeon’s set with tar-covered black flowers.
I wanted the mood, the “feel” of the narrative to be somewhat dark, scarily thrilling, and sensual. I spent a few days casting over 100 models to find two (Jennifer Massaud and Maud LeFort) who were just right, and fully understood what I was after.
We also had two male models, but their roles were secondary – they were dream figures, translucent, stimulating thoughts, more imagined by the two powerfully sexual women than actually present.
Is he there or just imagined?
The set we devised was complicated and gave me the opportunity for unusual lighting.
Morgan found clothing designs that went perfectly with set.
The shoot took two entire days and went well; making everything even better, the fashions were wonderful: beautiful, alluringly feminine designs.
Hair artist Cirilli invented and created perfectly for the set and styling.
Milone’s make-up gave this image (about desire) just the right feel.
As is often the case in the best editorial shoots, I had the opportunity to make some images that were not pre-planned, some of which I didn’t intend for the magazine – just pure beauty studies of two real beauties.
