Blog #189 12/22/16
This blog post is a kind of a “how to” – somewhat unusual for me. If you’re not a photographer, simply enjoy the abstract patterns all made in the camera.
They were made by having a talented gymnast, Mam Smith, suspended by ropes attached to a secure ring attached to the 12 foot studio ceiling, swinging across the plane of the camera’s lens.
On the left, Mam is upside down and facing the camera; on the right, facing away—you get the idea, yes?
Here an assistant starts the gymnast swinging.
To capture the entire sequence of movement, I set four strobe packs to flash sequentially, one after the other, and then to repeat the cycle for multiple images. This resulted in rapidly repeating flashes every 0.01 seconds.
Once the technique was worked out, making unique photographs was all about Mam’s creativity on the rope, and a good edit.
